February - March 2007

Volusia County Social Studies Fair Rules, Regulations, and Procedures  The official guide to social studies fair projects followed by Volusia County Schools.  Contains all the information on research, size of projects, team competitions, etc.

Social Studies Sources   A collection of many different websites with geographical and historical information.

National History Day  The national organization that sets the theme for social studies fair competitions has many links to ideas for projects and information that you can use to do your project.  This is a great place for students who need help getting started.

100 Milestone documents  100 documents compiled by the National Archives. These documents chronicle U.S. history from 1776 to 1965 and include a facsimile, as well as the full text of each document in readable text. These documents are primary sources.

Eyewitness to History   Your ringside seat to history - from the Ancient World to the present. History through the eyes of those who lived it. The documents in this site are primary sources, and instructions for how to cite each article are included at the bottom of each page.

National Archives   Many stories and photos from history can be found here, including information on the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and “The deadly virus”, about the 1918 flu pandemic.

Galileo Galilei   Galileo, an Italian astronomer born in 1564, challenged the accepted belief was that all of the planets revolve around the earth. During his research on the planets, Galileo was able to prove that all of the planets revolve around the sun. The Catholic Church, which was very powerful, disagreed with Galileo. He was tried for heresy, but he stuck to his beliefs, which modern science has proved to be accurate.

Florence Nightingale  Florence Nightingale insisted on becoming a nurse, even though her parents were against it.  She supervised other nurses at a hospital during the Crimean War and insisted on cleanliness and care of the patients, ideas that were not in practice at the time for patient care.  Her greatest achievement was to raise nursing to the level of a respectable profession for women.

Africans in America   This web site, from PBS, has a lot of biographical information on people like Frederick Douglass, Dred Scott, and John Brown.  From the main page of the web site, click on “search” and then type in the name of the person you want.

The West - from PBS  This site has a lot of information on people, places and events connected with the old west.  If you click on “people”, you can find biographies on General Custer, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and other famous people who took a stand in history.

Child Labor Reform  Lewis W. Hine took photographs which showed many young children working long hours in dangerous jobs.  After seeing his photos, people lobbied for a change in the child labor laws, many of which are still in place today.

Amistad  Information about the slave rebellion on the Spanish ship "Amistad".

Woman Suffrage and the 19th Amendment  History of women's suffrage From the University of Rochester.

Rachel Carson  Rachel Carson was a writer and a biologist, who took a stand in history by warning people that pesticides were dangerous to humans when used on crops.  DDT, one of the main pesticides used, was later banned due to her efforts.

How we made the first flight   Orville Wright gives a detailed account of the first flight and the events leading up to it. This is a primary source.

The Dolley Madison Project  This web site provides information about Dolley Madison and husband James, who was the 4th president of the U.S. Also included is an account of how Dolley saved a portrait of George Washington from destruction during the war of 1812.

Great Fire of London  Good information on the fire from an online education service in England.
