Surfcat:

SurfCat is the computerized catalog which shows library users where materials are located throughout the system. Terminals are located at every branch. Web access to SurfCat is available from the Library Home Page.

Reference Materials and Assistance:

The six Regional Branches in the Volusia County Library System have in-depth reference collections. The Community Branches have basic reference collections. The Volusia County Library Center in Daytona Beach at City Island has the most comprehensive business collection as well as a collection of selected state and federal documents.

Special Collections:

Special collections throughout the library system include the Genealogy/Local History collections at the DeLand and Daytona Libraries. A collection of materials on environmental studies is available at the Deltona Regional Library.

Audiovisual/Computer Services:

The Audiovisual/Computer services throughout the library system provide both instructional and entertainment video cassettes, music on compact discs, music cassettes and audio books. Public access computers are also available at all branches.

Program Services:

Throughout the year many branches provide programs for all ages. Programs include story times, book discussions, educational sessions and more. Visit your branch regularly for announcements and the Happenings newsletter. The Happenings are also published online.

Public Use Meeting Rooms:

Meeting rooms in the Volusia County Public Library system are available to the public with certain restrictions. Rooms vary in size and hospitality features. Check with your local branch for room availability. See fee section for costs.

Friends of the Library Groups:

Library Friends provide invaluable volunteer support, community interactions and legislative support. Friends' groups charge nominal dues and hold meetings for members. To join a Friends of the Library group or volunteer, visit a branch near you.

Borrowing Materials

Limits on Loans:

Library patrons may have up to 5 each of the following items checked out on their library card at any one time:  Fiction DVDs, Non-Fiction DVDs and Music CDs.  There are no limitations on books, magazines, VHS tapes or audiobooks (tape or CD).

Returns:

All materials borrowed may be returned to any Volusia County Public Library facility. Outside bookdrops are provided for your convenience.

Circulation Information:

Reservations:

You may place reservations for circulating materials owned by the Library on the SurfCat terminal or from the Web by accessing SurfCat from your home computer.

Renewals:

Most materials may be renewed. Exceptions include reserved materials. Materials must be brought to the library circulation desk along with your library card to be renewed. Materials can also be renewed from the Web by accessing SurfCat from your home computer.  An item may be renewed up to five (5) times, unless reserved for another patron.

Reservations and Interlibrary Loans:

Each branch serves as an access point to the system's entire collection. If your branch does not have the materials you need, visit the branch owning the materials or request it by placing a hold on the item. All available materials except for reference may be sent to other branches. You will be notified when the materials you requested have arrived at your branch.

If the Volusia county Public Library does not own the material desired, it may be borrowed from another library system.  Interlibrary loan requests are $5.00 each.  Additional fees may be required if a lending library charges a fee for certain items.

Library Cards

...are free to Volusia county residents. Visit or call your nearest branch for information on how to get a library card.

...can be obtained for children preschool through the eighth grade with a signature on the application from the parent or guardian. (Parent or guardian must show proof of residency.) Volusia County Public Library adheres to the laws of the State of Florida in all aspects of confidentiality of records. Circulation information for minors will be provided to the parent pursuant to Florida Statute 275.261.

...are valid at all branches of the Volusia County Public Library. Protect your card. Cardholders are responsible for all materials checked out on their library card. Address and phone number changes must be reported immediately by coming to the library with proof of new address. Report all lost or stolen cards immediately.

...are issued to organizations (nursing homes, etc.) in the name of the organization free for three years. Please contact your local branch for special arrangements.

...are free to residents of Brevard, Flagler, Lake and Putnam Counties. Visit or call the nearest branch for information on how to get a library card.

Fines and Fees

Fines:

The fine for overdue DVDs is $1.00 per day, per item, with a maximum fine of $15.00 per item. The fine for all other overdue materials is $.25 per day, per item, with a maximum fine of $15.00 per item.  Items returned after the library is closed will result in the materials being overdue and will incur a fine.

Fees:

There is no charge for non-profit organizations.
There is a charge of $120.00 for use when the library is closed (available in some branches).
