Outreach
Volusia County Public Library’s Mission is to provide citizens and visitors with exceptional library services that facilitate personal growth, economic development, and quality of life in a manner that strengthens community pride while fostering a countywide identity and partnerships.
The library’s Outreach Service strives to achieve this mission by immersing library services within all county communities to:
- Meet community needs beyond traditional library branches.
- Provide equitable service by ensuring that library services are available to all county residents, regardless of geography or means.
- Strengthen relationships between the library and community partners.
- Build awareness of the library’s resources and services.
- Encourage lifelong learning and economic development through the promotion of the library’s research tools, makerspaces, and programming.
The library achieves this by:
- Hosting library card drives or otherwise participating in community events such as festivals, holiday parades, fairs, and more.
- Inviting local groups, businesses, educational institutes and homeschool families, and citizens for dedicated library tours and curated workshops.
- Visiting neighborhoods, camps, after-school programs, and community special events using old-fashioned pedal power with the library’s Bicycle Cruiser or with futuristic technology and robotics with the library’s Mobile Technology Lab. The Cruiser, a traveling book bike, can offer citizens materials to check out, new library cards, fun library swag, and more. The Mobile Technology Lab offers technology lessons and demonstrations on robotics, drones, coding, and more.
- Offering pop-up programming such as hosting storytimes in public parks, at museums, in daycares, schools, and Headstarts, camps, etc.; offering culinary lab demonstrations at local malls or senior centers; presenting genealogical or local history talks at community centers, historical societies, civic centers; or hosting library service workshops at local chambers of commerce, colleges, business institutions, civic centers, etc.
- Working with county government and local media to produce PSAs for library programs and services, for special library events, and during times of emergency.
- Actively engaging the community with a dynamic, interactive website and an up-to-date social media presence.
